The 2026 personal website benchmark: what a great site ships with

We looked at what the best personal sites share in 2026 and compressed it into one benchmark: five categories, twenty checks, no vanity metrics. Score yourself honestly — 16 or more is excellent.

The benchmark

Speed & delivery

  • First Contentful Paint under 1.5s on mid-range mobile
  • No render-blocking third-party scripts
  • Images lazy-loaded and sized (width/height set)
  • Hosted on infrastructure with real uptime (99.9%+)

Structure

  • One canonical URL with HTTPS
  • Semantic headings (a single h1, logical h2s)
  • Per-page title + meta description
  • A sitemap and a real 404 page

Content

ElementBaselineExcellent
About page2 paragraphs, photo, what you doStory + proof + the reader's next step
Work samples3 items with contextCase studies with outcomes and numbers
Writing1 recent postA short series with a theme
ContactA form or emailA booking flow with availability

Privacy

  • No third-party trackers
  • Cookieless analytics (or none)
  • No consent-banner dark patterns

Identity

  • Custom domain (or a subdomain you are proud of)
  • One visual identity: consistent palette, type and avatar
  • Dark mode respected

Note

The benchmark is cumulative by design. Speed and structure are table stakes; content and identity are where sites separate. If you can only fix one category this month, fix Structure — it multiplies everything else.

Scoring yourself

Give one point per check. The bands:

ScoreMeaningNext move
0–7Under constructionStructure + speed first
8–12FunctionalDeepen content: case studies over lists
13–15StrongIdentity polish + a writing cadence
16–20BenchmarkKeep it current; teach the rest of us

Tip

Re-run the benchmark quarterly. Sites decay silently — a stale copyright year or a dead portfolio link costs more credibility than a missing feature ever does.

Every LinkMe site starts at 13+ out of the box: HTTPS, semantic themes, cookieless analytics, sitemaps, dark mode and structured content are defaults, not plugins. The remaining points are yours — the part that makes it yours.
